Fuel Docks in the San Juan Islands: Where to Fill Up, and What to Know Before You Go

The San Juans have fuel, but not on every island, not at every hour, and not every month of the year. Knowing which docks sell what, and when they're open, is most of fuel planning up here.

Here's the list, checked against each marina's own website on November 3, 2026 (West Sound Marina comes from a cruising-guide listing, explained below). Hours change with the season, so treat this as a starting point and call ahead, especially from fall through spring.

A few notes on the list:

  • Friday Harbor's fuel pier is run by an operator, Island Petroleum Services, and its own page lists the fuel a little differently from the Port's. Either way, it's gas and diesel.
  • Rosario Harbor is a separate company from Rosario Resort, so use the harbor's number, not the resort's.
  • On Lopez, fuel in Fisherman Bay is at the Lopez Islander. Islands Marine Center, also in the bay, doesn't list fuel on its own site, though some online directories say it does.
  • Anacortes is a good place to fill up before you cross. Both fuel docks publish their hours, but Skyline closes Sundays from November through April.

Winter changes the map

We couldn't find any official source that publishes one calendar for San Juan fuel docks; each marina sets its own hours. From what the marinas publish now:

  • West Beach's fuel dock and moorage are closed until March 10. Washington State Parks' Sucia Island page names West Beach as the nearest fuel, "available seasonally", so in winter, plan to fuel somewhere else before heading to Sucia.
  • Friday Harbor runs shorter winter hours.
  • Deer Harbor, Rosario Harbor and the Lopez Islander don't publish winter fuel hours, so a phone call is the only way to know.
  • Blakely's store closed for the season Sept 26, and State Parks lists its fuel as seasonal, so confirm before you go.

Some marine state park docks come out for the winter too. State Parks says the Doe Island and Jones Island docks are removed from early October to early April, and both have been pulled for this season. Fewer places to tie up means a little more planning between fuel stops.

Approaches worth knowing

These are the marinas' own notes. Check them against your charts and tide tables:

  • Fisherman Bay, Lopez: the Lopez Islander says the channel has 5 feet of water at a zero tide, and recommends arriving and leaving on higher tides.
  • West Beach: about 4.5 feet at zero tide at the floats.
  • Roche Harbor: the resort advises avoiding the passage between San Juan and Pearl Islands because of hazardous shallows, which it says can be challenging for larger vessels.
  • Deer Harbor: the marina warns of a sunken boat, not marked on charts, off the end of D-Dock that snags anchors; it suggests anchoring north of D-Dock or south of the fuel dock.
  • Blakely Island is private; marina guests stay on marina property, and fuel-dock parking is limited to two hours on quiet days and one hour on busy ones.

Plan the reserve, not only the stop

The Coast Guard's long-standing "One-Third Rule": a third of your fuel to get out, a third to get back, and a third in reserve. In the off-season, when a dock you were counting on might be closed, that reserve is what turns a closed dock into a detour instead of a problem.

At the pump, Washington Ecology's advice: "Fill only to 90 percent capacity… Don't top off your tanks," hold the nozzle, and keep an absorbent pad around it. If fuel does reach the water, Ecology says to report it right away to both the National Response Center (1-800-424-8802) and Washington Emergency Management (1-800-258-5990).

The short version

  1. Call ahead from fall through spring. Several docks don't publish winter hours.
  2. West Beach's fuel dock is closed until March 10.
  3. Ethanol-free gas is listed at Roche Harbor, Rosario Harbor, Blakely, Cap Sante and Skyline, and at West Beach once it reopens March 10.
  4. Fill up in Anacortes before you cross, and keep a third in reserve.

Hours, fuel types and contacts come from each marina's own website as of November 3, 2026, except West Sound Marina: we couldn't find a working website for it, so its details come from an undated Northwest Boat Travel guide listing. Marinas change hours without notice, so call before you go.
